SunSmart Tips

  • Sunscreen should be used in addition to shade and clothing, not as a substitute for it.
  • Smooth thick layers of SPF 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen onto the skin 20 minutes before going out into the sun and reapply every two hours.
  • Wear a broad - brimmed or legionnaire style hat to protect the ears and the back of the neck.
  • Stay in the shade as much as possible between 10.00 am and 3.00 pm.
  • UV rays can still be very high when there is cloud cover, remember to wear sun protection regardless of cloud.
  • Don’t be fooled by the cool weather Slip Slop Slap all year round! You cannot see or feel UV.
  • Don’t UV OD! Get out of the sun between 10 and 3.
  • UV rays will reflect off grass, water and paving, so you may need protection even in the shade.
  • The Cancer Council Western Australia recommends :-
    • Seek shade - 10 and 3
    • Slip on a sleeved shirt,
    • Slop on some 30+ sunscreen
    • Slap on a broad brimmed hat
    • Wrap on some sunglasses
  • There is no such thing as wind burn, last time you thought you had wind burn, you were actually sunburnt.
  • There's no such thing as a safe suntan... a suntan is a sign of skin damage.
  • Unprotected skin will burn in a little as 10 minutes…so get SunSmart and Slip! Slop! Slap!
  • Be wise and wear sunnies to protect your eyes.
  • A tan doesn’t last but sun damage does!
