The purpose of our ‘Target Population Drowning Prevention Project’ is to introduce the Swim and Survive Program within culturally and linguistically diverse groups in Western Australia.

LifeCare Swim Muslim Women's Swimming and Water Safety Program.Research has found that within these groups, awareness of the importance of swimming and lifesaving skills is significantly less than the rest of the population. Research indicates that only 2.6% of total enrolments in swimming and water safety are from Cultural and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities.While the ethnic origins of recent child drownings while on school excursion were Asian, Middle East and African respectively.

Several strategies have been developed to increase access and participation amongst CALD groups, these include;

  • Program Set-up; day of the week, time of the day, transport needs, crèche requirements

    Delivery; professional developing training to management and staff in cross-cultural awareness and alternative delivery strategies

    Design; requirements of privacy and separate gender classes, teacher/student ratios and if necessary program modification

  • Develop and distribute culturally appropriate promotional material for the Swim and Survive Program
  • Media campaign direct to target group

Build the capacity of identified Aquatic Venues to implement culturally appropriate programs.
