2012 Pool Lifeguard Challenge

Date: Thursday 16th February 2012
Time: 10.00am to – 3.00pm
Venue: Venues West Challenge Stadium - 10 Lane Outdoor Pool

The event is broken down into three events listed below. Each event tests teams on their physical fitness levels, reaction times, teamwork and first aid skills, each judged by trainers from Royal Life Saving WA and their score will then rank them in an overall position.

Super Lifeguard Team

All competitors from each team participate and are separated into pairs competing simultaneously resulting in a combined time for one team. One lifeguard completes the swim stage which consists of a short distance swim combined with towing of submerged manikins while the second lifeguard assists with administering CPR on the last manikin removed from the water

25m Team Relay

All competitors from each team participate in a relay form and swim though a number of submerged obstacles and tow manikins over the distance, the manikin must be removed from the pool before the next swimmer starts. Teams are assessed on their overall time to complete the course.

Emergency Scenario

3 competitors from each team respond to scenarios given to them and deal with the situation at hand. Teams are assessed based on their response to incidents involving aquatic rescue, resuscitation and public relations.

Event Information

The Pool Lifeguard Challenge is a competition run by Royal Life Saving WA annually with the aim of testing teams of professional lifeguards. Teams of four lifeguards are entered by aquatic centres throughout Western Australia to participate. Each lifeguard team must respond to scenarios given to them and deal with the situation at hand. Teams are assessed based on their response to incidents involving aquatic rescue, resuscitation and public relations.

The event provides pool lifeguards with an opportunity to practice essential life saving skills under the guidance of professional industry examiners. In addition, the skills learned through participating in the Pool Lifeguard Challenge greatly assist lifeguards to create safer aquatic centres throughout Western Australia.

The event receives significant support by major sponsor, AVP Constructions. With the ongoing support received from AVP Constructions, the Western Australian aquatics industry is the beneficiary of such an event.

Ongoing support from the Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics (LIWA) ensures this event has excellent support from the aquatic industry.


2011 Pool Lifeguard Challenge Results

Bayswater Waves (Team 1)– Winners of the 2011 Pool Lifeguard Challenge

The 2011 Pool Lifeguard Challenge was held on Thursday the 17th of February by the Royal Life Saving Society of Western Australia and Leisure Institute of Western Australia (Aquatics).

The challenge was accepted by ten exceptional pool lifesaving outfits from aquatic centres around the metropolitan and winder regional areas to test their teamwork and skills against one another. This year’s outstanding event was bigger and better than ever, with a group of four indigenous lifeguards from Port Headland making the long journey to be the first regional team to compete in the annual event.

Jeff Fondacaro President of LIWA and Ryan Glass from AVP Commercial Pools presented the trophies to the winning team from Bayswater Waves. Following the winning team was Craigie Leisure Centre (Team 2) in second and Craigie Leisure Centre (Team 1)in third.
