A Great Way to Remain Involved

Lifesaving sport is a great way to remain involved in swimming after the usual school age program.

Many swimmers reach a point where they have completed enough swimming lessons to be competent swimmers, however they may not wish to join a swimming club. The Junior Lifeguard Club program allows swimmers to learn new skills and practice them in a friendly, team environment without the pressure of competition.

To find your closest JLC, check out our Endorsed Swim School directory. Look for the JLC logo on the right hand side, indicating which centres offer the program.

Carnivals

Junior Lifeguard Club carnivals are held throughout the year to give participants a chance to put their skills into practice. The JLC carnivals are open to any JLC club member, as well as swim school and swim club participants who want to give lifesaving sport a go.

At each carnival, competitors can win a range of individual prizes just by having a go! In addition, participating clubs are each eligible to win the carnival prize which is generally an item of lifesaving equipment to the value of $150.

Junior Lifeguard Clubs and the JLC Carnivals are aimed at promoting participation and involvement in lifesaving sport. The carnivals are suitable for beginners to more advanced lifesavers, with a focus on fun.

Events

The events conducted at local centres as part of Royal Life Saving’s Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) program are adapted from the events run at National and International Pool Lifesaving competitions.

Each event is designed to build on rescue, endurance and initiative skills, and can be adapted to any age group. Current JLC events include:

Swimming with Obstacles
Obstacles are submerged (0.5m – 0,7m below the surface), positioned approximately 10m from each end of the pool. Swimmers surface dive under the obstacles to reach the end of the pool.
Obstacle Relay
This involves the same setup as the Swimming with Obstacles event, however it is conducted in relay form (4x25m or 4x50m).
Saving Manikin with Fins
Swim freestlye with fins, rescue the manikin and tow it the same distance to the finish.
Rescue Tube with Fins
Tow a patient using the rescue tube, or tow a hald filled manikin using the rescue tube.
4x25m Manikin Relay
Each swimmer tow the manikin over the distance before passing it to the next team member.
Rope Rescue Relay
Rescuer coils and throws the rope to initiate a rescue. The rescued swimmer becomes the next rescuer.
Rescue Relay
To be completed in teams of four. The first and second swimmers rescue each other with the same item. The third and fourth swimmers rescue each other with a different item.
