Charity Co-operation delivers Award

The Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (CLCRF) was recently awarded a Fundraising Institute Award (FIA) for Excellence in Fundraising (Chapter 5 - WA) for their community fundraising program.

CLCRF is a small WA based charity which raises funds for research into childhood cancers. The FIA is the peak body for the fundraising industry in Australia. CLCRF conducted 4 raffle campaigns and 3 direct mail programs during 2008/09 and these were recognised as the best fundraising programs in WA for the budget renewal category.

With limited internal resources and only 2 full time staff CLCRF engaged the services of the RLSSWA who operate a shared services charity marketing operation to deliver the programs.   The programs include telemarketing and direct marketing strategies and covered WA, NSW, Tasmania and South Australia.

CLCRF has achieved a net income of over $444,000 through community fundraising, while achieving many other significant key objectives, including;

New Programs
• The implementation of new donor appeal programs has delivered over $65,000 additional funds (after all costs).

By working together CLCRF have achieved their fundraising objectives and leverage the expertise of the RLSSWA marketing team.
This award is an example of how two like-minded charities working together can achieve industry best practice.

Developing stronger links between Singapore Sports and WA Sports

Aiming to further develop friendly relations and sports collaborations between Singapore and the State of Western Australia, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation (WA, DSR), Royal Life Saving Society, Western Australia (RLSS, WA) and Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS). The MOU will enhance and facilitate sporting exchanges and cooperation in the areas of high performance and sports safety

This MOU formalises our existing commitment to share knowledge and enhance our mutual capabilities in the development and promotion of sports and recreation. Through stronger cooperation and collaboration, we will see greater achievements in sports safety, sports science and high performance specifically, as well as the development of research and educational resources for use by all.” said Mr Oon Jin Teik, Chief Executive Officer of SSC.

Mr. Ron Alexander, Director General (WA, DSR) said, “The Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation believes that sport and recreation has a big role to play in creating stronger, healthier and happier communities, and therefore we are very happy to share our experience and expertise with our Singapore neighbours. We are particularly keen to help develop strategies to increase participation in sport, which in turn will result in success at the elite level.”

A key area of cooperation under the MOU is Sports Safety. The MOU will enhance cooperation between the parties to promote exchanges in sports safety frameworks, best practices, campaigns, and research developments with the goal of fostering a sports safety culture through accelerated learning and outreach to the public.

Both parties will help develop a safety validation framework and enhance training in risk and incident management for Singapore. This will help build Singapore’s capability for sports risk and incident management and directly help equip stakeholders like the National Sports Associations and event organisers with the skills necessary to assess hazards and provide mitigation for sports events.

“For a start, we’ll be working together with the Royal Life Saving Society, Western Australia to promote and provide training in risk management, incident management and investigation. This is a continuation of our efforts to champion and develop sports safety practices in Singapore as laid out in the Sports Safety Implementation Plan launched in 2008,” said Ms Delphine Fong, Director for Sports Safety, SSC.”

Mr Alex McKenzie, Executive Director, RLSS, WA said, “Royal Life Saving is very pleased to be associated with the Singapore Sports Council over the last few years. The MOU further develops this relationship to enable the sharing of ideas and programs that are designed to make sport safer. This ongoing collaboration will ensure that together we can make sport a safer and enjoyable experience for all.”

The MOU caters for high-level sports delegation visits between SSC and WAIS to facilitate exchange of views and sharing of information in the areas of sports science, sports medicine and research and development. This cooperation may extend to athletes to use Singapore and Western Australia as their training hubs to prepare for international competitions.

“The formalisation of the relationship developed over the past five years between WAIS and the Singapore Sports Council through this MOU provides the opportunity for even closer ties between our high performance coaches and scientists,” said Mr Grant Boyce, Chairman (WAIS), “we look forward to developing specific projects of mutual benefit to Western Australian and Singaporean athletes." “We are very pleased to work with WAIS over the years and it is timely to make our relationship official. The MOU will present us more opportunities to share and learn from each other, especially in the areas of Sports Science and Coaching. I am confident that athletes, coaches and officials from Singapore and Western Australia will benefit substantially from our enhanced collaboration efforts,” said Mr Bob Gambardella, Chief of Sports Development & Singapore Sports Institute.

WA Drowning Toll Decreases - Against National Trends

Contrary to national statistics, WA has recorded a dramatic drop in the number of drownings, new figures show.

Our recently released WA drowning report reveals that in 2008, a total of 29 people drowned.

This figure represents a 20% decrease from 2007 and remains under the five year average (2004-2008), despite recent increases in national statistics.

Australia-wide, drowning deaths have increased by over 15% since 2007, with toddler drowning deaths still remaining an area of concern.

Despite this, in the past ten years WA has seen the average number of toddler drowning deaths halved with only three deaths recorded in 2008. Western Australia is seen as the leaders in toddler drowning prevention with statistics out-performing the Australian average by 50%.

While there have been many successes, preventing drowning deaths within the WA community still remains an arduous task.

Alcohol remains one of the key water safety priority areas in Western Australia. From 2000-2008 there have been 55 alcohol related drowning deaths in the WA community, with almost 80% of these deaths in those aged 15-59 years.

Our drowning report has revealed that the contributing factors to these deaths are similar for both youth and adults alike.

This clearly demonstrates that current alcohol and water safety messages need to be expanded to include older age groups.

The Royal Life Saving Society WA Inc will continue to work in partnership with other organisations including the new Principal Community Partner BHP Billiton to build on the reduction in drowning deaths in 2008.

2009/2010 Keep Watch Launch

Over the past ten years we have seen the average number of toddler drowning deaths reduced by almost 50% in Western Australia with only three deaths recorded in 2008. Western Australia is seen as the leaders in toddler drowning prevention with statistics out-performing the Australian average by 50%.

The Keep Watch Toddler Drowning Prevention program was officially launched with great success on Tuesday 1st December 2009 by the Royal Life Saving Society WA and their new Principal Community Partner BHP Billiton along with child water safety advocate Laurie Lawrence. On the first day of summer we were urging all parents to continue their vigilant supervision of young children when in and around the water.

The Royal Life Saving Society WA also launched their new Keep Watch television advertisement which is the first advert specifically created to target WA parents. Assistance from BHP Billiton our Principal Community Partner, Department of Health and the 303 Advertising group has made producing this advert a success.

The Royal Life Saving Society WA is building a partnership with well known child water safety advocate Laurie Lawrence, founder of Kids Alive – Do the Five. Laurie Lawrence also launched the release of his new child water safety DVD which will be distributed throughout Western Australia with assistance from Royal Life Saving in an attempt to further reduce toddler drowning deaths. Laurie Lawrence Says “It is my fervent wish that together with the Royal Life Saving Society we can not only look towards zero toddler drowning deaths in WA but zero toddler drowning deaths all over Australia.”

It is key partnerships such as these that have increased awareness of toddler drowning prevention and ultimately resulted in the dramatic reduction we have seen in toddler drowning death rates in WA.

BHP Billiton/Royal Life Saving Society WA $1 million sponsorship deal

Following an extensive ten year history together, Royal Life Saving Society WA and BHP Billiton have recently signed a one million dollar sponsorship deal, making BHP Billiton our Principle Community Partner.  Since the year 2000, the partnership has grown from a relatively small $30 000 grant funding the Remote Aboriginal Swimming Pools Project, to financially supporting the majority of Royal Life Saving Society WA programs.  BHP Billiton now funds both the Keep Watch and Don’t Drink and Drown programs, as well as Swim and Survive, Watch Around Water, and our aquatic training initiatives.  These programs encourage aquatic participation across a diverse demographic, with a particular focus on Indigenous Australians, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, and youth.

BHP Billiton is clearly committed to assisting us with promoting participation in aquatic pursuits, and ultimately preventing drowning deaths within the WA community.  Royal Life Saving Society WA sincerely wishes to thank BHP Billiton for their continued support and commitment to our organisation.  We look forward to new partnership opportunities in the future.

Royal Life Saving wins Australian Marketing Institute Award

The Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) are the peak body for the marketing profession in Australia.  Each year the AMI present awards for marketing excellence.

This year RLSSWA were nominated for our "KEEP WATCH" program in the "Social Marketing" category.

Recently at the AMI State Awards evening - RLSSWA's Keep Watch program was announced the state winner for marketing excellence in the social marketing category.  This category attracted 4 state finalists and was the most nominated category of all the awards.

The following is an overview of the award winning KEEP WATCH marketing program:Drowning is still one of the leading cause of preventable death in children under the age of five in Australia.  Over the past decade on average, one child under the age of five drowns each week in Australia.

This statistic is nothing short of a national tragedy.

Royal Life Saving Society WA has implemented a community marketing program called “KEEP WATCH” to change community behaviour through, Legislation, Public Education, Community Awareness, and Research.

RLSSWA has successfully engaged the community through fundraising based marketing programs to raise monies to fund the KEEP WATCH program.  This achieved both community awareness objectives but importantly, it has been largely funded by the community in which the message is directed.

Significantly, Western Australia has achieved a 46% decrease in the average number of annual drowning deaths amongst children under the age of 5 years since 1999.

This equates to saving more than 3 children’s lives per year, each year, for the past 10 years.

This significant lifesaving reduction has out-performed the national average by nearly 50%.

The KEEP WATCH program has and continues to save toddlers lives in Australia.

Congratulations to everyone involved in some way in the KEEP WATCH program  and the marketing effort that goes into making it an outstanding program.  This is truly a RLSSWA team effort and delivers true community benefits.

In 2008 RLSSWA won 2 state marketing excellence awards for the "Warren Blackwood Call Centre" project, and in 2007 SIDS & Kids WA won an equivalent award for a project implemented by RLSSWA call centres and marketing operations.

Don’t Drink and Drown Kimberley Indigenous Resources Broome Trip

The Royal Life Saving Society WA has been working hard to finalise their campaigns for the coming summer busy period.  This year the Don’t Drink & Drown campaign will be expanding it’s focus to the Kimberley region.  Recently, the Community Health Unit travelled to Broome to meet with delegates in the local area to find out the best way to do this.

Funding received by the Department of Health WA will be used to develop concepts for three Indigenous resources appropriate for the Kimberley region.  To ensure the resources are as relevant as possible, meetings were organised with key local organisations during the Broome trip.

The trip was a great success with some very useful feedback received including the types of resources that would be suitable and important design techniques to use.

This trip was also used to promote the Keep Watch campaign’s Child Safety Forums.  This campaign was well received by the Child Health nurses approached with the pleasing result that in November, Child Safety forums will be conducted throughout the region.  This will be in collaboration with Kidsafe WA and the Farmsafe WA Alliance.
