Watch Around Water

Information for Aquatic Centres

The Watch Around Water campaign is a comprehensive package which includes 5 components:

Policy requirements

As a Watch Around Water accredited centre there are a number of mandatory that must be implemented that are in line with the new legislation and the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations regarding supervision requirements of children whilst in aquatic facilities. This allows a level of consistency amongst aquatic centre supervision requirements to be established. A number of recommended policies are also put forward which aquatic centres are strongly encouraged to adopt.

Public Education

To educate and raise the awareness of the target group a variety of resources have been developed promoting key supervision messages. Resource kits including the following will be distributed to newly registered centres:

• Car park signage
• Posters
• Wristbands
• Stickers
• Brochure inserts
• PA announcements
• Access to campaign logos & artwork

There are also additional opportunities for the promotion of the campaign including lifeguard shorts, pull up banners and entry signage. Individual centres are encouraged to develop their own initiatives and promotional material.

Centres registering in subsequent years will pay a registration fee and any additional resources required can be purchased from Royal Life Saving at cost price.

Professional Development

Professional development is conducted with management and staff and involves the training of both groups on the philosophy and implementation of the campaign in their facility. Additionally centre staff receive training to equip them with the necessary conflict resolution skills to manage centre patrons.

Environmental Assessment

Each aquatic centre has its own individual and unique design. Recommendation of environmental modifications to create an environment that facilitates safer levels of parental supervision are offered as part of the program.

Centre Accreditation

Upon agreement to operate under Watch Around Water policy and to promote Watch Around Water through the centre, aquatic facilities will be accredited under the Watch Around Water scheme.
