Remote Aboriginal Swimming Pools Project

The project vision adopts the words of Lao Isu of China in 700BC-

Go to the people
Live with them
Learn from them
Love them
Start with what they know
Build with what they have
But of the best leaders
When the job is done
The task is accomplished
The people will say
We have done it ourselves

The Remote Aboriginal swimming pools project aims to reduce drowning, increase physical activity, reduce other health related issues and promote community cohesion in select Aboriginal communities through the provision of appropriate managed swimming pool facilities.

The program employs a full time on site pool manager at 3 remote communities within the Pilbara Gascoyne region of Western Australia including:

  • Jigalong
  • Yandeyarra
  • Burringurrah

There are 2 new swimming pools currently being developed in the following Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley region due for completion in 2007:

  • Warmun
  • Bidyadanga

The pool manager works with the guidance of RLSSWA in conjunction with the communities to manage the facilities provide maintenance, supervision, activities and swimming and lifesaving programs to the communities.
