Information for Community Workers
Preventing drowning and injury in the community is everyone's business. Community workers working in a setting in which they have regular contact with parents and young children, play a vital role in educating the community about drowning prevention.
There are a number of program stakeholders which support and promote the Keep Watch campaign. These include:
- Staff at regional and metropolitan population health units including health promotion officers and injury prevention officers
- Child Health Nurses
- Community Health Workers
- Aboriginal Health Workers
- Staff at metropolitan maternity hospitals and regional hospitals
- Resuscitation Instructors (Heart Beat Clubs)
- Swim School Coordinators (Infant Aquatics)
- Home Pool Inspectors (Home Pool Inspection Program)
To promote the Keep Watch messages to parents of young children established stakeholders listed above receive professional development training to ensure they have the knowledge, confidence and ability to promote the campaign's prevention messages.
Professional development training is targeted at the identified stakeholders but is not limited to this group. Other professionals within health, community and aquatic networks with an interest in child health and injury issues have access to support and educational materials from Royal Life Saving
Education and training is provided throughout the metropolitan area and in regional areas where toddler drowning has been identified as a significant injury issue.
For further information on professional development training or to organise a session please contact Royal Life Saving's Community Health department.
Royal Life Saving has a number of resources available to assist community workers in planning drowning prevention and water safety activities and programs. All resources are available in quantities to disseminate widely through community contacts in your area.
