Program Overview
Drowning is the leading cause of preventable death in children under 5 years of age. On average, over the last decade a child under five years of age drowned every week in Australia. The over-representation of this age group in drowning statistics is being addressed by the National Water Safety Plan with the 0-5 year age group identified as the number 1 priority area.
The Keep Watch Toddler Drowning Prevention Campaign has been developed to increase the awareness of toddler drowning prevention strategies and promote behaviour change in parents of young children.
The four key messages of Keep Watch are:
- Supervise your child at all times
- Provide barriers to water locations
- Familiarise your child with water
- Learn Resuscitation
Despite recent falls in toddler drowning rates, vigilance is still required with every toddler drowning preventable with adequate supervision.
