Injury causation is the result of the interaction between three broad types of factors - host factors, environmental factors, and vehicle/vector factors.

The Epidemiological Triad of Injury Causation
| |
Host (Human Factors)
i.e. susceptibility, exposure, experience, gender etc. |
|
 |
Agent (Vehicle or Vector)
i'e energy & its cjannels eg. electricity & electric lines, motion & cars, water (oxygen) etc. |
 |
Environment (Physical/Socio-Cultural)
i.e. buildings, road, attitudes, laws etc. |

causative factors used in the epidemiological triangle ensures that all potential countermeasures and strategies to reduce the rate and severity of the target injury will be systematically identified and explored during the development of injury interventions. Because injuries are multi-causal, interventions often need to be multi-faceted to be successful.
