The Don’t Drink and Drown campaign takes a harm minimisation approach to reduce alcohol-related drowning deaths in Western Australia. It promotes general alcohol safety messages as well as specific messages related to water safety.

Ten Tips to Drink Safely Around the Water

  1. Know your limits!
  2. Planning is the key! Why not swim before you start drinking …
  3. Eat a decent meal before or while you are drinking.
  4. Driving a boat under the influence is the same as driving a car — so don’t drink and drive … a boat!
  5. Drink plenty of water — especially if it is hot!
  6. Have a sober mate who can help if someone gets into trouble.
  7. Set a limit on how many drinks you are going to have when you drink, and stick to it.
  8. Always stick together — why would you let a friend wander off alone, especially if they are drunk?
  9. Remember — the effects of alcohol are magnified when you are in or on the water so take care!
  10. Look after your mates! Did you know that resuscitation efforts are less likely to work when you are drunk … so make sure you and your mates are safe.

And it’s not just swimming! Every recreational activity that involves water is potentially dangerous. Especially if you are drunk!

So whether you are swimming at the beach, having a BBQ with friends and family or out on the boat, the message is clear: Don’t Drink and Drown!
