Alcohol has been found to lead to an increased risk of drowning death and aquatic injury with its effects magnified when in, on, or around the water. Almost half of all drowning deaths amongst young adults in Western Australia are contributed to by alcohol.
Don’t Drink and Drown was introduced in 2004 to address the growing number of young people drowning after too many drinks. The campaign looks to raise awareness amongst young people aged 15–29 years of the risks associated with consuming alcohol in aquatic environments.
